Attention Reveals Presence in the Present

Note the repetition in the ideas of presence, being present, and the present moment. Attention only functions in the present moment; in fact, if you pay attention, the very act brings you into the present. When you’re present, you have presence—and presence is the experience of the soul. You can invest attention superficially or deeply, unconsciously or consciously, reaping benefits to the extent it is focused. When attention is focused by the left brain, only a small amount of the soul’s presence filters through, and what is revealed only fits the left brain’s limited understanding. But when attention is focused fully by the soul, you discover pure consciousness-and-energy wherever it is placed, invested, granted, given, directed, or turned. This kind of undivided attention creates a live connection to the world and opens you to seeing through the surface of life into the nonphysical world.

When the soul sees, everything you attend to enhances evolution and inspired creativity; the more deeply you pay attention, the more truth and spirit you find. When you realize it is you, the soul, who is paying attention, you experience more purposefulness and power. You may even wonder: “Am I creating life by perceiving it?” What’s interesting is that the soul only sees itself wherever it focuses attention because it is undivided and has no concept of “other.” So if you pay attention as the soul, you recognize a kinship connection between yourself and whatever you notice.

You might ask yourself, “Who is paying attention right now?” Is it your left brain or your soul? Seeing as the soul activates presence, which is more valuable than money because when you’re saturated with it, everything is saturated with it, and life’s mysteries unfold; wisdom is transmitted on its frequency. When the viewer and the viewed become the same, nothing can be hidden. You see the light inside life, and life becomes sacred.

People and places with presence have energy that makes you feel more conscious. I’m sure you’ve noticed that whoever or whatever has real presence is authentic, trustworthy, convincing, vital, magnetic, universal in some way, and naturally attention-getting and attention-giving. Think about people like the His Holiness the Dalai Lama, or structures like the Great Pyramid and the Taj Mahal, or places like the Grand Canyon and Mount Everest, or beings like the oldest trees on the planet. How enlightening it is to be in their presence!

Activate Presence with Attention

1. With the next person you have an exchange with, bring your attention fully into your body and the present moment. Remember that you are the soul, perceiving through the eyes of your personality, and really notice the other person, without labels or judgment. To do this, find quietness inside yourself. Being a neutral yet compassionate observer is the beginning of presence.

2. Place your attention on, around, and in the other person, softly and gently, as though it is golden or diamond light. Pay close attention to the way the other person speaks and moves, to their personal vibration, to any intuitive clues you pick up.
